How to Choose a Realtor in Montgomery County MD

Montgomery County is not one market — Rockville, Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Potomac, and Germantown all move differently, and a Realtor who only knows one corner of the county will guess at the rest. Don't pick someone off a slogan or a "top agent" badge. Look at what they can actually show you: recent closed sales near you, a pricing process they can walk you through step by step, how they prep and market a listing, and how fast they respond when it counts.

What Actually Tells You Something

Ask for recent sales in your specific neighborhood, not just "Montgomery County" in general. Ask how they'd price your home and why — the reasoning matters more than the number. Ask to see a real marketing plan and a listing they've prepped start to finish. A Realtor who works the county day to day should be able to talk about school boundaries, commute patterns, and which streets are holding value without looking anything up.

Red Flags to Watch For

Be skeptical of "#1 agent" or "best Realtor" claims with no source behind them, review widgets that only show hand-picked 5-star quotes, local pages that read like a template with the neighborhood name swapped in, and agents who can't name the last house they sold near you. If it sounds polished but vague at the same time, keep asking questions until you get a specific answer.

Why Kevin Grolig

Kevin has been licensed since 1986 and has worked full-time in Montgomery County since 1990 — this isn't a side hustle or a market he just started covering. He works Compass's Montgomery County book day to day, from Rockville and North Bethesda through Gaithersburg, North Potomac, Potomac, Germantown, Darnestown, and Clarksburg, mostly with sellers, move-up buyers, and downsizers who want a straight answer instead of a sales pitch.
