There are three well-marked trails, a 2.5-mile, a 5.5-mile, and a 7.5-mile loop, and the 5.5-mile Blue Trail is the one most people gravitate toward because it delivers sweeping views of both counties from the summit. It’s free, it’s close, and it’s one of those spots that reminds you why people fall in love with this area the first time they visit.

What’s the Best Spot for a Day on the Potomac River?

Great Falls is the answer if you want water, rapids, and a real sense of scale in one visit. It’s actually run by the National Park Service and sits in Potomac, and there’s a lot packed into one park: the towpath along the C&O Canal, the rapids at Great Falls itself, kayaking for anyone up for it, and the Billy Goat Trail, a 4.7-mile hike with dramatic views of the river and the Virginia side beyond it. My personal favorite move is the easier route, an easy two-mile walk on the upper towpath from Great Falls up to Old Angler’s Inn, where you can sit down and grab a cold drink at their beer garden before heading back. Beyond the lake, there are picnic areas, volleyball courts, and hiking and biking trails throughout the park.
