So you’re about to retire and you’ve realized that downsizing is definitely a must, but you’re simply not sure where to start. Let’s face it. Downsizing can be a daunting task, especially if you have no idea where to start, you might even feel like you’re getting rid of all of your memories and downsizing too much. In this article, we’re gonna cover the four most common mistakes that people make when considering a downsize and how to avoid them.
Number one, don’t rush the process. Downsizing can be a very big decision. It’s important to take your time and make the right decisions. Haste can lead to costly mistakes. You definitely do not wanna wait until your retirement to get started on downsizing. I always say sooner is better than later. This way, you get the opportunity to declutter and get a head, start on the packing process. Plus, it’ll be one less thing you have to worry about when you retire.
Number two, don’t underestimate the costs when you downsize. There’s no question your budget will change. Make sure you know how much your new monthly expenses will be so that you can budget accordingly.
Number three, don’t overlook the details. There are a lot of details that go into downsizing. So make sure that you’re taking care of everything from decluttering paperwork and all the legalities involved with making the move. You’ll want to consider all of your options. When I say considering all your options that could simply mean moving from maybe a larger single-family home to a smaller one, or it could mean moving to a condo or an apartment, maybe it’s an over 55 community. The bottom line is you have a lot of choices, a lot of options, and a lot to consider. So it’s better to start planning early.
Number four, don’t forget your emotional needs. Downsizing can be an emotional process. So be prepared for the stress and upheaval. One of the benefits of downsizing is you have this awesome opportunity to get rid of so much clutter. Unfortunately, many people hold on to things they simply do not need to avoid, go through all of your things and look at them from this perspective. If I haven’t worn it, if I haven’t read it, if I haven’t used it in the last six months, it’s probably time to get rid of it or go on a huge diet.
Overall downsizing can be a great way to simplify your life as you are either preparing for or entering retirement. But it’s important to avoid these four mistakes by doing so you will make the downsizing process go much smoother. Do you have any downsizing tips? If so, share them in the comment section below.
